Types of Employment Visas in UAE
Different types of employment visas exist in UAE. But standard work visa is the one where an employer sponsors an employee’s stay in UAE. It is called the employment visa.
The employer sponsors a standard work visa, which allows an expat to live and work in the UAE for three years. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratization (MoHRE) must approve it. To get this visa, you must have an employment contract. Also, you must accept a job offer in writing, get an entry permit, and apply for a work and residence visa.

The employer can apply for the employee’s work visa renewal or cancellation after its duration ends. An employment visa in the UAE lets you work in the private or government sector and free zones.
Self-employed professionals and freelancers also have the opportunity to work and live in the UAE through a Green visa. You do not need sponsorship from an employer, and can stay in the UAE for five years. You must submit proof of education, proof of enough income to last your stay in the UAE, and a self-employment permit from the MoHRE. The Green visa allows you to sponsor your family members’ relocation to the UAE. Upon expiry of the visa, you can stay for six months.
Qualifying Criteria
If you want to work in the UAE, you must be 18+ years old. The employer hiring you must have a valid license in the UAE and no violations of the UAE labor laws.
Also, your work must align with the company’s overall work and goals. The employee obtaining the visa must have at least a high school diploma degree. Employers hiring 65+ employees must pay a higher fee for an employment in Dubai visa.

You must submit the following documents for the employment visas of your employees:
- Original passport and its copy
- Entry permit from the Ministry of Labor (MoL)
- Photocopies of academic certificates authorized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of your country and the UAE Embassy

Procedure to get an Abu Dhabi Employment Visa
To get an employment visa in UAE, your employer must apply for it and handle its costs. You must handle the necessary documentation for the visa and residence permit. The following are the steps to get an Abu Dhabi employment visa:
Step 1
Employer Applies for Visa Quota Approval
Employers in the free zones must apply to the MoL for a quota upgrade or larger office shift. This is necessary because employers face quota restrictions on work visas. Only a specific number of employees are allowed in a specific area of office space.
The quota approval requirement is not valid in mainland UAE. The employer will directly apply for your entry permit to MoL.
Once the employer receives the quota approval, it must get the MoL’s approval on the work contract. For this, it must submit the contract in English, Arabic, and the local language, if different from the employee’s, and get their signature. After receiving the signed contract from the employee, the employer will send it to the MoL.
Step 2
Apply for an Employee’s Entry Visa
After approval of the work contract, the employer must get approval on the work visa application. The MoL checks two things:
- The sponsor (employer) is a registered business in UAE
- If any local UAE citizen with no employment is eligible for this job instead of the foreign applicant
The MoL approves the employer’s work visa application and issues a pink visa – an employment entry visa. Employees can legally enter the country, formalize the work visa, and apply for a residence visa using the pink visa. It is valid for two months. You can apply for a one-time extension if you are unable to travel to UAE in these two months. If the employee is already in the UAE on another visa, you can apply for a visa change status.
Step 3
Apply for Emirates ID
After getting the entry visa, you must prepare the necessary documents for an employment visa. The employee must prepare to get the Emirates ID and health certificate. You must visit the Emirates Identity Authority Center (EIDA). Here, you must submit your passport, entry visa, photographs, and biometrics. Based on this, you get an Emirates ID, your official identity document in the UAE.
Step 4
Get a Medical Checkup and a Health Insurance Policy
You must get medically screened in a government-approved healthcare center. You must send these checkup results to the employer. The employer uploads your labor contract on the MoL website within 14 days of receiving checkup results. Depending on your employer’s location, the employer will provide health insurance for you and your family, or you will need to buy one. But a health insurance policy is essential for getting or renewing a work permit.
Step 5
Obtain the Work Visa Followed by the Residence Visa
The MoL checks your medical checkup result, health insurance policy, and labor contract. Now, it grants you an official work visa. With this employment in Dubai visa, you can start working in the UAE. After obtaining the work visa, you can apply for a residence visa. A residence visa gives you permission to live in the UAE. You will need it to open a bank account, open a PO box, register a car, and complete other formalities.
